As I reflect on being born in January, I can’t help but feel connected to the traits often associated with this time of year. 1. Resilient and Determined (Capricorn & Aquarius Influence)

January babies fall under two zodiac signs—Capricorn (born from the 1st to the 19th) and Aquarius (born from the 20th to the 31st).

Capricorns are known for their practicality, resilience, and determination. As an Earth sign, Capricorns are hardworking, ambitious, and have a no-nonsense approach to life. They tend to set high goals and work tirelessly to achieve them.

Aquarians, on the other hand, are known for their originality, independence, and progressive thinking. If your baby is born later in the month, they may possess the innovative, curious nature of an Aquarian, always thinking outside the box and marching to the beat of their own drum.

Whether your January baby is a Capricorn or Aquarius, they are likely to have a strong sense of self and the determination to pursue their dreams. Both signs are natural-born leaders, making them great role models in the future.

2. Born in the Heart of Winter: A Cosy Time to Be Born

As a January baby, I can relate to the cosy, introspective nature of this month. The chill in the air and the serene quietness that comes after the holiday rush make January a time for reflection and new beginnings. January babies often have a peaceful and calm demeanour, making them easy to be around. The winter months also tend to encourage deep thinking, and many January-borns grow up to be thoughtful and introspective individuals.

Plus, who doesn’t love those cosy moments bundled up in blankets? There’s something inherently comforting about being born in winter—a sense of warmth and safety that I always appreciate.

3. Birth Flowers: Meaningful Symbols

January has two beautiful birth flowers: the carnation and the snowdrop. The carnation is a versatile and colourful flower that typically symbolises love, fascination, and distinction. Known for thriving in cold weather, it represents strength and resilience, perfectly aligning with the chilly January days. This flower is a beautiful symbol of enduring love and perseverance through difficult conditions, much like the strength of a January-born individual.

On the other hand, the snowdrop is a symbol of hope, as it is one of the first flowers to bloom after the harsh winter. It signifies renewal, rebirth, and the promise of spring. Their delicate white petals are often associated with innocence and clarity, representing the beauty found even in the coldest months. Snowdrops remind us that, even in the harshest conditions, there is always the possibility of new beginnings and beauty emerging from adversity.

Both flowers embody themes of love, resilience, hope, and renewal—qualities that reflect the unique and resilient nature of January babies.

4. The Birthstone: Garnet—Symbol of Protection and Strength

January’s birthstone, the garnet, is known for its rich, deep red colour, and it symbolises protection, strength, and vitality. It is often believed to offer emotional healing, promote positive energy, and provide a sense of calm. For a January baby, this stone is a reminder of their inner strength and resilience.

Garnets also symbolise friendship and love, making them an ideal gemstone for those born in January—two qualities that will no doubt surround your baby throughout their life.

5. Smart and Driven

January babies often carry with them a natural drive and intellectual curiosity. Many born during this month tend to do well academically and often thrive in situations where focus and discipline are required. Their ambition and strong will often result in them achieving whatever they set their minds to. As a January baby myself, I feel connected to the determination and sense of purpose often seen in those born at the start of the year.

6. Leaders of the Pack

Capricorns are known for their leadership qualities, and Aquarians, while a bit more independent, also possess unique leadership skills due to their visionary ideas and forward-thinking nature. January babies may grow up to be natural leaders, commanding respect not just for their knowledge and work ethic but for their ability to inspire others with their innovative thinking and empathy.

7. January Babies Are Born in the “Clean Slate” Month

It’s the first month of the year, and there’s something about that fresh start that gives January babies an edge. It’s the month of new year’s resolutions, fresh starts, and a sense of limitless possibilities. When you’re born in January, you’re born into a world full of hope, making it the perfect time to bring a new life into the world!

8. A Month of Reflection and Legacy

January babies, like the month itself, tend to bring reflection and a sense of legacy with them. They often serve as a reminder that the journey of life is full of growth, learning, and perseverance. Whether they’re born under the Capricorn or Aquarius sign, January babies seem to carry a sense of purpose, which makes them poised for greatness in the future.

Newborn sessions with siblings, especially toddlers, can be unpredictable.
Some days they are all in. Other days they aren’t. And that’s okay.

This big sister wasn’t very keen on being in the photos. So instead of forcing it, I gave her a different role.
She became my assistant.
She helped me photograph her baby brother and her parents.
Suddenly, she felt special. She was part of the process. And Mum still got the beautiful family photos she wanted.

I find that involving toddlers and giving them a job to do works magic.
It shifts their energy from resistance to collaboration.
Everyone feels seen. Everyone gets their moment.

This is what 15 years of experience looks like. Knowing when to adapt. Knowing how to make it work for every member of the family.

If you’re expecting a second baby and worried about how your toddler will handle a newborn session, don’t be.

We’ll find a way to include them that feels right for everyone.

Through motherhood, we go through job titles quicker than in an entire career

I personally went from
Mamma → Mummy → Mum → Vale…
and now I’m just Bruh or Buddy. 🙈

They grow up fast and one day they won’t even want to be in the photo!

So let’s make the most of these Mummy years!

This is what happens when you book a newborn session with me.

You come to my studio. Maybe you’re tired. Maybe you’re overwhelmed. Maybe you’re wondering if this is worth it. Maybe all of the above!

You arrive, I welcome you in, offer you tea, and we slow down.
I guide you gently through everything, so you can just be present with your baby.

I capture the tiny details. The yawns. The way your family looks at this new little person. The love that’s already there.

And then picture this! A few weeks later, something arrives at your door.

Not just digital files. Not just photos on a screen.

But a beautiful album, designed for you, ready to hold and show your child one day.

That’s the difference between a photo session and what I create.

It’s not just about capturing moments. It’s about preserving them in a way that lasts.

Your newborn days are fleeting.
But this? This stays forever.

Today is World Mental Health Day, and I want to say this gently: you don’t have to have it all together to be worthy of care, love, or rest.

Motherhood, creativity, business. They all carry invisible weights sometimes.
It’s okay to set them down for a moment.
It’s okay to just be.

There’s real courage in that stillness.
